Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu was on Wednesday, December 3, detained by officers at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), preventing investigators from questioning him over corruption allegations he has levelled against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
Kpebu, who had arrived for a scheduled meeting, reportedly clashed with police officers at the OSP entrance and was taken into custody before any interrogation could begin. Sources say the Special Prosecutor could not proceed with questioning while he remained detained.
Although he was later granted bail requiring a landed property in his name as security his lawyer returned to find that Kpebu could not be located.
This development adds to the growing tension between Kpebu and the OSP. The lawyer has consistently criticised the office for alleged procedural lapses, accusing the Special Prosecutor of delegating investigations to junior officers who report directly to him.
Ahead of a previous meeting, Kpebu told journalists that he would only cooperate with an independently constituted investigative committee, insisting that the current process undermines fairness and integrity. He also cited earlier concerns about how the OSP handled investigations involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The OSP has not yet issued an official statement on the detention. Sources indicate that Kpebu may be released later tonight.
