Man Arrested in Ashanti Region with Over 200 Rounds of Ammunition and Military Gear

A 25-year-old man, Yussif Mohammed, is in police custody after being caught with a large cache of ammunition, weapons, and military-style gear near the Asankare Police barrier in the Ashanti Region.

He was apprehended on Wednesday, May 8, by the Konongo Divisional Police Command, following a tip-off from alert members of the public. The arrest occurred when a backpack fell from an Accra-bound bus Yussif was travelling in from Kumasi. Observant witnesses alerted nearby officers, who immediately intervened.

Upon inspection of the bag, police discovered:

207 rounds of assorted ammunition: 97 G3 rounds, 42 AK-47 rounds, and 35 CZ rounds

Loaded and empty G3 and CZ magazines

A bulletproof vest, military boots and trousers, and talisman-laced smocks

Suspected Indian hemp, a crash helmet, and black and green jackets and pullovers

Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, ACP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, confirmed the items and stated that Yussif claimed ownership of the backpack. He added that investigations have commenced and the suspect will soon be arraigned before court.

ACP Nyaaba issued a warning to criminals, emphasizing the police’s resolve to make communities safe. He also called on the public to support law enforcement efforts by volunteering information, stressing, “Community vigilance is key.”
