President John Dramani Mahama has announced a new national initiative, the School Agriculture Programme, designed to enhance food security by integrating hands-on agricultural training into Ghana’s education system.
Speaking at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in Ho, President Mahama disclosed that the programme will require every secondary school and tertiary institution to operate a functional school farm. The objective is to equip students with practical agricultural skills while supporting food production nationwide.
He explained that schools will be encouraged to rear livestock such as chickens, goats, sheep, and even cattle, as well as cultivate key vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, okra, and other produce commonly consumed in school communities.
To ensure smooth implementation and coordination, the government has appointed a National School Agriculture Coordinator, who will oversee the rollout and provide technical guidance to participating institutions.
President Mahama expressed confidence that the initiative will not only provide students with valuable experiential learning but also strengthen Ghana’s long-term food security.
“Soon, we shall launch this programme, and I believe it will also contribute to Ghana’s food security,” he said.
The School Agriculture Programme is expected to foster self-sufficiency among schools and inspire a new generation to take greater interest in agriculture as a viable and impactful career path.
