President John Dramani Mahama says he will sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if it is passed by Parliament, reaffirming his commitment to what he calls Ghana’s traditional family and moral values.
Speaking during a meeting with the Christian Council of Ghana on Tuesday, November 18, Mahama stated that gender is determined at birth and described the family as the nation’s foundation. He stressed that his views align fully with the Christian Council’s position on the issue.
Mahama also backed the Speaker of Parliament’s call for the bill to be relaid, debated, and amended where necessary before a final vote.
He emphasized that the decision of Parliament and the Ghanaian people will ultimately determine the outcome.
“If Parliament endorses and passes the bill and it comes to me as President, I will sign it,” he said.
