Mahama has no plans to cancel Free SHS – Haruna Iddrisu

Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister-Designate for Education, has assured Ghanaians that President John Dramani Mahama has no intention of canceling the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, 2025, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the government’s commitment to refining and improving the policy, which was introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration.

The Free SHS policy featured prominently in President Mahama’s 2024 campaign, with a promise to make it more efficient and beneficial for all Ghanaians.

“Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no option to cancel Free SHS,” Haruna Iddrisu stated. “He has consistently said, even during his campaign, that he will expand Free SHS to benefit more Ghanaians.”

The minister-designate also announced plans for a stakeholder forum to gather input on enhancing the education sector. He affirmed the government’s dedication to aligning the policy with constitutional provisions under Article 25 and Article 38, which outline the objectives of Ghana’s educational system.

“The important thing is that [Mahama] will subject the Free SHS to a review,” Haruna Iddrisu concluded, signaling a focus on sustainability and improvement rather than abolition.
