President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to launch an immediate investigation into the deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
In a statement signed by the President’s Executive Secretary, Calistus Mahama, the directive emphasized the need for justice and accountability to strengthen Ghana’s democratic process.
“I have been instructed by H.E. John Mahama to formally request your office to initiate immediate investigations into the tragic deaths of Ghanaian citizens during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. These incidents, which occurred in various parts of the country, have left a lasting scar on our democratic process, and it is imperative that justice is served for the victims and their families,” the statement read.
Key Proposals for Investigation
The President outlined specific measures to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation:
- Dedicated Investigative Taskforce
A special taskforce within the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) is to be established, focusing solely on these cases for efficient and undivided attention. - Collaboration with Witnesses and Families
The IGP has been directed to engage eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other relevant individuals to gather critical information. - Review of Electoral Security Arrangements
Investigate the conduct and role of security personnel deployed at the affected polling stations to determine their involvement or lapses. - Use of Forensic Evidence
Advanced forensic techniques are to be employed to analyze physical evidence from the crime scenes, including bullet casings, weaponry, and other materials.
The directive underscores the President’s commitment to addressing electoral violence and restoring public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system.
