President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has allocated GHC30.8 billion in the 2026 national budget for the government’s flagship Big Push Agenda, a road infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming Ghana’s transport network. The new allocation represents more than double this year’s GHC13.8 billion budget for road projects.

The significant funding boost is intended to fast-track the completion of ongoing road projects and launch new networks, particularly along the northern transport corridors. The initiative is also expected to strengthen regional trade integration and enhance Ghana’s position as a leading transport hub in West Africa.

Speaking at the Wa Big Push Project sod-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, President Mahama described the programme as a major pillar of Ghana’s long-term development vision.

“To our contractors and engineers, let me be clear: the days of poor construction, inflated claims, and abandoned projects are over. Ghana deserves better. You must deliver quality on time and within budget so that the Ghanaian taxpayer can see value in every kilometre of road constructed,” he stated.

President Mahama assured that financing would not hinder progress, emphasizing the government’s commitment to prompt payments under the new framework.

“As I’ve said, this year, the Finance Minister allocated 13.8 billion cedis to the Big Push road programme. Next year, 30.8 billion cedis will be reserved for the same initiative. Payment delays will no longer be an issue — once a contractor completes a certified project to specification, payment will be made immediately,” he affirmed.

He also encouraged communities to play an active role in safeguarding materials and supporting engineers to ensure the project’s success.
