Kwahu Traditional Council Dismisses Claims of Queen Mother’s Abduction

The Kwahu Traditional Council has refuted reports that the Paramount Queen Mother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfuah III, was abducted during a security operation at the Abene Palace on Monday, November 17.

According to the Council, the widely circulated claims are false and misleading. They explained that the security presence at the palace was related to an interlocutory injunction issued on June 24, 2024, by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs. The injunction, granted in favour of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, restrained Baffour Osei Akoto—who has been presenting himself as Kwahuhene—the Queen Mother, and others from interfering with palace operations.

The Council said the Ghana Police Service acted on the court directive to maintain peace and prevent disputes. They clarified that the Queen Mother does not reside at the Abene Palace, contrary to reports suggesting she was taken from the location.

“No abduction has taken place,” the Council stated, noting that persons arrested during the operation are in lawful custody and in good condition.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the immediate release of the Queen Mother and tasked the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operation and sanction any officers found culpable.

The early-morning operation involved armed men in police uniforms claiming to be from National Security. Residents reported hearing gunshots before the alleged arrest. Security has since been tightened across Kwahu to protect residents and visitors.
