The Kwadaso Wood Market in Kumasi, a bustling hub for timber and wood products, has suffered its second devastating fire in just two weeks, compounding the struggles of traders already reeling from previous losses.
The latest fire broke out late Sunday, January 19, wreaking havoc across the market. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as flames consumed numerous stalls and shops. Videos captured desperate traders attempting to salvage their goods amid the inferno while calling for urgent assistance.
The fire spread rapidly, fueled by the flammable materials prevalent in the market, including wood, sawdust, and timber-processing chemicals. Despite swift notification, firefighters faced significant challenges in containing the blaze due to its intensity.
This incident comes only two weeks after a similar catastrophe on January 4, which destroyed large sections of the market. Traders were still grappling with losses of goods, tools, and essential infrastructure when this second disaster struck.
Following the earlier fire, market authorities and city officials had initiated discussions on fire safety measures, such as installing fire hydrants, conducting regular safety inspections, and creating firebreaks within the market. Unfortunately, these plans were still under development when the latest fire occurred, highlighting the urgency for immediate action.
The back-to-back incidents have left traders devastated, with many calling for swift implementation of fire safety protocols to protect their livelihoods and prevent future tragedies.
