In a major political shift within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ofosu Asamoah, former Kade MP and campaign manager for Kwabena Agyepong, has officially declared his support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The announcement was made at a campaign event in the Eastern Region, marking Asamoah’s first public appearance with Bawumia’s team since the internal contest began. His endorsement is expected to strengthen Bawumia’s efforts to consolidate backing across key regions ahead of the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
Asamoah explained that the decision followed a careful reassessment of the party’s trajectory and electability, adding that Bawumia offers the NPP the “strongest chance” of retaining power in the 2028 elections.
“I am still the same Ofosu Asamoah you know… I simply chose not to back him earlier this year. But sometimes in life, you recognize that a change is necessary,” he said, highlighting that his experience observing Agyepong’s campaign informed his decision to switch allegiance.
Political analysts view the move as a strategic boost for Bawumia, bringing experienced campaign management, local influence, and organizational strength, particularly in the Eastern Region, a critical NPP stronghold.
The defection signals intensified maneuvering within the party as candidates prepare for the upcoming presidential primaries, which will determine the NPP’s flagbearer for the next national elections.
