Scores of commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as Pragya riders, have taken to the streets of Kumasi to protest what they describe as persistent extortion and harassment by officials of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

The protesters parked their tricycles and blocked other operators from working across the metropolis, forcing many to join the demonstration.

Speaking at the “Enough is Enough” protest on Thursday, November 20, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Union of Tricycle Operators, Ghana, Seidu Mubarak, said the riders are unhappy with the continued mistreatment by KMA task force personnel.

He noted that although operators previously complied with KMA’s restrictions, which banned tricycles from major areas within the Central Business District two years ago, concerns over unfair treatment have resurfaced.

Pragya tricycles have become a major mode of intra-city transport in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region, making the situation a growing concern for commuters and operators alike.
