Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Performs First Ever Cochlear Implant Surgery In Ghana

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has successfully performed the first-ever Cochlear implant surgery in Ghana.

The surgeries were carried out on Thursday, November 11, 2021 for two patients aged two and four years.

The third surgery was also conducted on Friday, November 12, 2021 for another patient aged five.

Cochlear implant is an electronic device that stimulates the auditory nerves placed in the inner ear, allowing people with profound hearing loss to perceive sounds.

The historical cochlear surgeries performed in the Hospital reinforces Korle Bu’s trailblazing role in expanding the frontiers of health care delivery, access and affordability.

The team will engage the media over the weekend to brief the public on the surgeries.

A combined medical team from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the ENT Department of the University of Alexandria performed the historical surgeries.

The combined team was lead by Professor Ahmed Mehanna and Dr Mohamed El Disouky (African Development & Regional Manager for Med-El Medical Electronics, Egypt).

The Korle Bu team comprises of Dr. Kenneth Baidoo (Head of ENT), Professor Emmanuel Kitcher, Dr. Alhassan Jangu, Dr. Kuuzume Philibert, Dr. Kafui Searyoh, PNO Phylis Nsiah and other supporting doctors and Anaesthetists.

There were also Audiologists, theatre and Administrative staff.
