A study conducted by the Department of History and Political Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has revealed that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s selection as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia negatively impacted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections.

According to the research, while 85.45% of respondents were aware of Dr. Prempeh’s candidacy, opinions on his influence were divided. The study found that 47.29% believed he had a negative impact on the campaign, while 32.24% viewed his influence as positive. Additionally, 36.31% of respondents expressed strong dissatisfaction with his performance.

In contrast, the study found that Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum was the preferred choice for running mate among 53.14% of respondents, with 58.56% seeing him as the candidate who would have had the most positive impact.

Lead researcher, Professor Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, highlighted the implications of these findings:

“The data reveals mixed perceptions, with a notable 47.29% of respondents believing that Dr. Prempeh negatively impacted the campaign,” he stated.

Professor Adu-Gyamfi further emphasized the importance of selecting a running mate who can energize party supporters and enhance the campaign’s appeal.

Political scientist Dr. Amakye Boateng also pointed to public dissatisfaction with Dr. Prempeh’s selection, reinforcing concerns about his influence on the party’s electoral performance.

The findings suggest that while Dr. Prempeh enjoys broad recognition, dissatisfaction with his candidacy posed challenges for the NPP. The study further indicates that Dr. Adutwum’s strong public appeal and track record could have provided a more strategic advantage for the party.

To improve future electoral success, the study recommends that the NPP address public concerns over candidate selection and ensure alignment with voter expectations.
