Statistics from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) show that about 33% of cases at the Accident and Emergency Unit are linked to road crashes.
Dr. Yaw Opare Larbi, Deputy Medical Director of KATH, explained that while some incidents are domestic, most are road traffic accidents, often resulting in fatalities. He noted that many accidents stem from driver and pedestrian errors, faulty vehicles, or poor road conditions, emphasizing that a large percentage are preventable.
Dr. Larbi urged the government and citizens to prioritise safety, advocating for intensified public education, enforcement of traffic laws, and individual responsibility to reduce accidents.
The comments were made during a donation event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, where the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, provided aid to eight road crash victims.
Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, known as “King Zuba,” highlighted the assembly’s road safety measures for the festive season, including strict enforcement of transport regulations and a ban on tricycle operations in the Central Business District, warning that offenders risk arrest.
