Joyce Bawah Mogtari, special aide to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has demanded the resignation of Jean Mensa, Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC). She accused Mensa of incompetence and partisanship in managing the recently concluded 2024 general elections.
In an appearance on Channel One TV’s Face to Face program on Tuesday, December 10, Mogtari expressed dissatisfaction with the EC’s performance, citing delays in result declaration and a lack of transparency as contributors to election-related violence.
“I was thinking that the EC Chairperson was going to resign yesterday. Yes, absolutely… They have been incompetent to say the least. There are too many partisans there,” Mogtari remarked.
She suggested that Mensa’s resignation would pave the way for reforms needed to rebuild public confidence in the Commission.
“One of the reasons we have these pockets of violence is that it took too long for the EC to declare the result… Like she said, ‘it is finished,’ it should be finished for her as well,” she added.
Mogtari emphasized the urgency of a comprehensive overhaul of the Electoral Commission to ensure credibility and trust in future elections.
