The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has established a Special Investigative Team to probe election-related deaths from the 2020 and 2024 elections, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.
The Chronicle Newspaper reports that the team, based at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, comprises experienced and skilled officers led by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe. The team has been given specific timelines to complete its work and submit findings to the IGP.
In his response to the President, the IGP assured that all necessary resources would be provided to facilitate the team’s efforts. The investigation builds on prior work initiated by Dr. Dampare since his appointment as IGP in 2021.
The investigative efforts will be closely aligned with the ongoing work of the Cold Case Unit, which was set up at the CID Headquarters to handle unresolved criminal cases. The unit has reportedly made significant progress in investigating the 2020 election-related deaths, with some suspects already facing prosecution.
President Mahama’s directive, issued in a letter dated January 10, 2025, seeks to ensure accountability and justice for the victims of election-related violence. The IGP’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to addressing unresolved crimes and strengthening public trust in Ghana’s security apparatus.
