The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to take over the probe into an attack on the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and his team at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.
According to a police statement, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has been invited to assist with the investigation after he was accused of inciting a mob and obstructing the NAIMOS team during their operation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on Saturday, November 1, 2025, the NAIMOS Director and his team arrested several illegal miners at Bronikrom near Hwidiem. Items retrieved included a Smith & Wesson pistol, two pistol magazines, 21 rounds of 9mm ammunition, an unregistered Range Rover, a Toyota RAV4, and several mobile phones.
While the suspects were being transported to the Hwidiem Police Station, the MP reportedly arrived with a group and demanded their release. When his demand was denied, the group forcibly released the suspects and chased the NAIMOS team away.
Later, a mob of about 600 people allegedly instigated by the MP besieged the Hwidiem Police Station, vandalizing vehicles, damaging parts of the station, and setting the NAIMOS Director’s car ablaze. Reinforcement from the Ahafo Regional Command was dispatched to restore calm.
Peace was eventually restored through the combined efforts of the police, military, and the Zongo Chief of Hwidiem, who helped mediate the situation and ensured the safe evacuation of the NAIMOS team. No casualties were recorded, although the Chief’s vehicle was damaged in the process.
