Renowned businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, has met with 13-year-old Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, the youngest student ever admitted to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The meeting, which took place in Accra on Monday, February 3, 2025, provided an opportunity for the young physics prodigy and his parents to engage in an inspiring conversation about education, ambition, and the future of science in Ghana.
Mr. Mahama, a strong advocate for youth empowerment and academic excellence, commended Melchizedek for his outstanding academic achievements. The teenager, who hails from Bole in the Savannah Region, made headlines after obtaining 5 As and 3 Bs in the WASSCE at just 13 years old, securing his admission to KNUST to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.
As part of efforts to nurture his passion for science and engineering, Mr. Mahama provided Melchizedek with a unique learning experience aboard one of his private jets. During his return flight to Kumasi, the young scholar was given an exclusive tour of the cockpit, offering him a firsthand look at the technical operations of an aircraft—an experience that aligns with his deep interest in physics and aerospace engineering.
“This experience reinforces my belief that understanding the principles of physics can open doors to many fields, including aerospace engineering,” Melchizedek said after the cockpit tour.
Beyond mentorship, Mr. Mahama pledged to fully fund Melchizedek’s education, covering his tuition, accommodation, and essential academic expenses at KNUST and beyond.
His parents expressed profound gratitude for the generous support, recognizing the life-changing impact it would have on their son’s academic journey.
Encouraging the young prodigy to keep striving for excellence, Mr. Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to supporting talented Ghanaian youth.
“Young minds like Melchizedek are the future of Ghana. It is our responsibility to support and nurture them so they can reach their full potential,” he stated.
