Heavy Rainfall on Friday Causes Widespread Flooding Across Accra: Do Not Take These Routes

In a relentless downpour of rain, Accra, Ghana’s capital city, has experienced severe flooding in multiple areas, disrupting daily life and posing significant risks to residents and commuters. The recent heavy rainfall has left several parts of the city inundated, with authorities urging citizens to exercise caution and prioritize safety.

The Tema Motorway, a major thoroughfare leading to TT Brothers, has become one of the most affected areas. Intense rainfall has caused the Tema Motorway to be submerged, presenting significant challenges for both drivers and pedestrians. Authorities are strongly advising individuals to take precautions and avoid this route until conditions improve.

Further exacerbating the situation, the Odawna River has overflowed its banks, leading to substantial damage to homes and properties in the surrounding areas. The flooding at Odawna has prompted emergency response efforts to help affected residents and mitigate further harm.

Kaneshie, Odorkor towards Mallam, and the Tema region have also witnessed widespread flooding. Roads in these areas have become treacherous for commuters, and authorities are urgently recommending that drivers and pedestrians exercise extreme caution. Safety must be a top priority, especially in these perilous conditions.

Tema Floods have had a severe impact on the Tema Secondary School (Temaasco) towards Community 1 road, rendering it impassable. With visibility compromised and water levels rising, officials are advising all drivers and pedestrians to take alternate routes and avoid this area until it is deemed safe.

Darkuman Junction remains submerged, causing significant disruptions to local transportation and commerce. The floodwaters have yet to recede, and residents are encouraged to stay informed about the situation in their area and follow any evacuation or safety instructions provided.

One of the most affected routes, the Spintex Road, has also succumbed to the deluge. Authorities are urging residents and commuters to avoid this route if possible, as it has become hazardous and may result in accidents or further congestion.

The Accra flooding crisis serves as a stark reminder of the need for comprehensive urban planning, drainage systems, and disaster preparedness measures in our rapidly growing cities. The government and relevant agencies are urged to take long-term actions to address these recurring challenges.

As the situation unfolds, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and cooperate with authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of the community.
