Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has raised serious concerns over the misuse of government-provided tablets by some Senior High School students, revealing that the devices are being used to access pornographic content.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 27, the Minister said about 980,000 out of the 1.3 million tablets distributed nationwide are yet to be fully customised to ensure they are restricted to educational purposes.
He explained that he inherited a US$337 million contract to supply the devices, but many have not been configured to block non-academic websites and applications.
Haruna Iddrisu noted that his attention was drawn to the fact that several students were using the tablets for inappropriate activities, including pornography, describing the trend as unacceptable.
He stressed that the government is taking the matter seriously and will enforce strict limitations to ensure the devices serve their intended purpose—enhancing learning.
According to him, the tablets must be used solely for academic work, and measures will be implemented to restrict access to non-educational content.
