The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured students and management of the Northern School of Business Senior High School (NOBISCO) and Labone Senior High School of the construction of new dormitory facilities following recent fire incidents at the two schools.
A fire outbreak on Wednesday afternoon gutted the girls’ dormitory at NOBISCO, displacing close to 900 female students and leaving them without accommodation.
During a visit to the Tamale-based school on Friday, January 30, Haruna Iddrisu disclosed that procurement processes for new girls’ dormitories at both NOBISCO and Labone SHS in Accra are already underway.
He explained that earlier delays in the release of funds were due to a misunderstanding during the issuance of a warrant by the Ministry of Finance, which initially viewed the project as a duplicate renovation.
“We are currently in the procurement process. In the case of NOBISCO, there was confusion when the warrant was being issued, as it was thought to be a repeat renovation. I clarified that this is an emergency project for a new girls’ dormitory,” he said.
He assured the school authorities and students that the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, is committed to providing a dedicated and modern girls’ dormitory to address accommodation challenges at the school.
The Education Minister also expressed his sympathy to the management, staff and students affected by the fire, describing the incident as distressing and unfortunate.
He reaffirmed government’s resolve to ensure that displaced students are provided with safe and adequate accommodation while efforts are expedited to begin construction of the new facilities.
