The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged the University of Ghana (UG) to reduce residential facility fees by 25% for both fresh and continuing students.
This request was made during a meeting on February 6, 2025, with the university’s management, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo and the Student Representative Council (SRC), at the Ministry of Education in Accra.
“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent, and I have subsequently asked her to engage the SRC in the future on any fee announcement,” the Minister stated.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo assured the Minister of the university’s willingness to comply with the directive.
“We have listened to our Minister and our students, and we can afford to reduce it to 25% across the board. Moving forward, there will be adequate student engagement,” she said.
SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah welcomed the reduction but emphasized the need for refunds to students who had already paid the higher fees.
“We appreciate the reduction as it eases the burden on parents, but there should be a refund for those who have already paid,” he stated.
University management disclosed that approximately 80% of students had already settled their residential facility fees before the announcement.
