Hiplife artist Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known widely as Guru NKZ, has officially re-entered the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential race after winning an appeal.
Guru had previously been disqualified from the election by the SRC Electoral Commission, citing a breach of Article 30, which requires presidential candidates to be hall residents and eligible for Junior Common Room (JCR) positions. During vetting, both Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, admitted to not being residents of any hall, leading to their removal from the race.
In response to the disqualification, Guru’s legal team submitted a petition to the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, requesting a review. They also filed an interim injunction with the Judicial Board, asking for a temporary suspension of the electoral process until a thorough review could be conducted.
On September 15, 2024, after a formal hearing, the Appeals Board unanimously overturned the disqualification by a 7-0 vote. The board ruled that both Guru and his running mate should be reinstated on the list of SRC presidential candidates.
The next phase, a ballot draw for all vetted candidates, is set for Monday, September 16.
