Guinea-Bissau has plunged into fresh political turmoil after a faction of the military arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embaló on Wednesday, just days after the disputed 23 November presidential election.

Soldiers stormed the presidential palace around midday and took the president into custody. Embaló later confirmed his arrest in a message to Jeune Afrique, stating that although he was seized from his office, he was not physically harmed. Security sources and eyewitnesses, however, reported gunfire around the palace and near the national electoral commission earlier in the day.

The operation extended beyond the president. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Biague Na Ntan, his deputy, General Mamadou Touré, and Interior Minister Botché Candé were also detained by the same military faction. Embaló has described the development as a “coup d’État,” accusing the head of the army’s land forces of orchestrating the action.

Tensions had been building even before the arrests. Official election results were expected Thursday, but competing camps had already declared victory. Embaló’s team claimed he secured 65 percent of the vote based on internal tallies, while his main opponent, Fernando Dias da Costa, also declared himself winner. The conflicting claims heightened national uncertainty.

Guinea-Bissau has a long history of coups and military interventions, raising fears that this latest development could plunge the nation back into instability. Regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union are expected to respond as the situation unfolds.

The president’s current location is unknown, and divisions within the armed forces appear deepening. With both presidential candidates claiming victory and the military now directly involved, the coming days will determine whether Guinea-Bissau heads toward negotiation or deeper conflict.
