Guinea-Bissau’s ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has arrived safely in Senegal after being released by the military officers who overthrew his government earlier this week.
Senegal’s foreign ministry confirmed that Embaló landed in the country late Thursday on a chartered military aircraft, following negotiations led by the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS.
Meanwhile, the military junta in Guinea-Bissau has sworn in Gen. Horta N’Tam as the country’s transitional leader. He is expected to govern for one year.
The coup occurred on Wednesday, just a day before authorities were scheduled to announce provisional results of presidential and parliamentary elections. The military has since halted the electoral process and blocked the release of results.
According to the coup leaders, the takeover was intended to prevent an alleged plot by unnamed politicians, who they claim were backed by a “well-known drug baron,” to undermine national stability. A night-time curfew has also been imposed as tensions escalate.
