A wedding in Akyem Anamase near Oda, Eastern Region, turned into a heartbreaking tragedy last Friday when the groom, Chief Inspector Godwin Beniba, collapsed and died moments before the ceremony.
Chief Inspector Beniba, who served as the Station Officer at the Anamase Police Station, arrived at the event venue, Anamase Hotel, accompanied by his best men. He had been waiting for his bride, Florence Debrah, who was in one of the hotel rooms preparing for the ceremony.
Eyewitnesses reported that the groom complained of dizziness shortly after entering the venue. Before anyone could assist him, he collapsed.
Efforts were made to rush him to the Anamase Clinic, but he was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.
The tragic news devastated the hundreds of attendees, including police officers from various parts of the country, as well as family and friends who had gathered to celebrate the union. Many were overwhelmed with grief, and the festive atmosphere quickly turned somber.
Large quantities of food and drinks prepared for the celebration were left untouched as distraught invitees left the venue in sorrow.
The groom’s family, who had traveled from the Northern Region, made arrangements to transport his body to the Oda Government Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.
Residents of Akyem Anamase were also deeply affected by the loss, with the usual festive activities of the Christmas season coming to a halt as the community mourned the untimely death.
