President John Mahama has announced that the government will pay the academic fees of approximately 156,294 first-year students enrolled in public universities across Ghana for the 2025 academic year.
The initiative, dubbed the No-Academic-Fee policy, fulfills one of Mahama’s flagship campaign promises and aims to improve access to tertiary education, particularly for students from low-income families.
During his national address on May 7 to mark 120 days in office, Mahama disclosed that GH₵452.9 million has been allocated for this purpose, to be distributed via the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND). The funds will be paid directly to the institutions to avoid bureaucratic delays.
To facilitate the process, a ‘No-Fees-Stress’ portal has been launched, allowing students to register and confirm their eligibility for the policy. Data from the Education Ministry has been shared with GETFUND to guide the disbursement.
The President also introduced two additional policies: Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), both of which have been factored into the 2025 Budget.
