Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that government will begin constructing a 1,200-megawatt state-owned thermal power plant in 2026 to boost reliable and affordable electricity supply across the country. He made the announcement while presenting the 2026 Budget Statement to Parliament on Thursday, November 13.
Dr Forson explained that Ghana’s OCTP and Jubilee partners are expected to produce about 150 million standard cubic feet of gas daily in the medium term, enough to generate up to 1,200MW of power. The new plant will offtake gas from the OCTP partners and the Gas Processing Plant 2 (GPP2) to meet rising energy demand from households and industries.
He described the project as a strategic investment aimed at ensuring long-term energy security, expanding generation capacity, and supporting industrial growth. The initiative aligns with government’s broader energy strategy focused on efficiency, reduced electricity costs, and sustainable infrastructure development.
