Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the 198-kilometre Accra–Kumasi Expressway within the next three years, despite public skepticism over the ambitious timeline.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, November 14, 2025, Dr. Forson emphasized that the expressway remains a top priority under President John Dramani Mahama’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme. The project aims to ease travel, improve safety, and stimulate economic activity between Ghana’s two largest cities.
He explained that the road will operate on a user-pay system, with varying tolls depending on the route chosen. Motorists using the expressway will pay slightly higher fees for a faster, more efficient journey, while users of the improved trunk road will either pay no fee or only a standard toll.
“With the express road, you will pay something higher than a toll, but with a trunk road, you will not pay, or at worst, you pay only a toll fee,” he said.
Dr. Forson confirmed that the engineering estimates for the project have been completed, but specific figures cannot yet be disclosed as the tendering process is still pending. He noted that the government has allocated GH¢30 billion to the Big Push initiative, adding, “President Mahama will finish this project before he leaves office.”
When asked whether the three-year timeline is truly achievable, he responded confidently, “Yes, we will get it done.”
The expressway will feature eight major interchanges at strategic points including Accra, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Ofoase, Lake Bosomtwe, and Kumasi. Once completed, it is expected to drastically reduce travel time, streamline traffic flow, and enhance regional connectivity across the country.
