Government has announced that families of the six applicants who died in the El-Wak Stadium recruitment stampede will receive automatic slots for qualified relatives to join the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The tragic incident occurred when hundreds of applicants rushed into the stadium for documentation and body selection, resulting in a deadly surge that claimed six lives and left several others injured.
During a visit to one of the bereaved families at Eyan Maim in the Central Region, Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has directed each affected family to present a suitable replacement for enlistment.
He noted that recruitment activities in Accra have been suspended to allow for improved safety protocols. The state will also support the families with burial and funeral arrangements.
“The President has asked us to inform you that all those who wanted to wear the military uniform but died in the process, their families should present a replacement to be absorbed into the military,” he said.
Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, described the incident as heartbreaking and assured the families of full government support. She added that victims receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital are being cared for at state expense.
A preliminary inquiry by the GAF indicates that the stampede was triggered when applicants breached security protocols and forced their way through the gates ahead of time.
The government’s intervention aims to honour the memory of the deceased and assure families of its continued commitment to their welfare.
