Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has responded to concerns raised by unposted teachers who staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday, demanding immediate postings. Addressing journalists on November 19, he reaffirmed that the education sector remains Ghana’s largest employer and that resolving the issue of unposted teachers is a top government priority.
He announced that Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 6,100 teachers, all from the 2023 graduate cohort, who he said have already been captured in government recruitment records. According to him, this move is part of efforts to address the backlog of trained teachers awaiting placement.
Haruna Iddrisu urged the protesting teachers to report to their respective offices for verification and audit processes, insisting that this is necessary for their reinstatement and eventual payment. He added that some of the teachers demonstrating may already be due for processing.
Meanwhile, the Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers from the Colleges of Education has staged a demonstration over delays in postings. The group, made up of the 2022 and 2023 backlog, says members remain unposted despite completing national service and passing the Teacher Licensure Examination.
The protest, which began at Tema Station in Accra, is expected to end at the Jubilee House, where the group plans to present a petition to the presidency.
