Good News For Northern Region; Tamale Teaching Hospital Gets New Emergency Operations Centre And Laboratory

The Ghana Health Service in collaboration with United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has unveiled a new Public Health Emergency Operations Centre and the expansion of the Public Health Laboratory at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region.

The two facilities are to enhance public health alert and early testing of disease anytime there is an outbreak.

Speaking at the commissioning of the facilities, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye said the facilities will serve as a footprint for technical coordination of the public health emergencies and response structure, a collaboration of real-time information and resources for timely detection of disease for effective response.

He said it will also serve as a source of event-specific data which can be analyzed for evidence-based decision making.

Dr Aboagye noted that the international health regulation requires that all countries strengthen and maintained their capacity to respond promptly and effectively to public health diseases and emergencies.

The commissioning of the Northern Region centre brings to two of the three centres build in Ghana. The Director-General urged the management of the facilities to ensure it is well maintained.

The US Ambassador to Ghana Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan on her part said the EOC and the Molecular Laboratory is part of the US government support project through the Center for Disease Control to support Ghana’s disease surveillance and response infrastructure.

She said the covid-19 pandemic has exposed the need to localize public health capacity especially in the area of workforce development, surveillance, laboratories and emergency management and response.

Ambassador Sullivan said the functional centre control and command centre of all levels of a health system is essential for the effective coordination of Covid-19 response strategies.

She noted that Ghana is not out of Covid-19 woos yet and therefore institutions should continue to enforce the protocols.

The Northern Regional Deputy Director Clinical Care of the Public Health, Dr Abukari Baba Braimah said a team of eight staff one from the disease control and surveillance unit of the regional health directorate will superintend the operations of the facility.

Dr Braiman said you ensure that they charn out excellent results EOC the region would continue to collaborate with Enhanced Strategies to Protect and Improve Health Security in Ghana project (ESPIHS-GH) rollout capacity enhancement programs to equip the staff with the needed capability to perform the tasked requires of an EOC.

He said considering the crucial role the northern region plays in the management of disease outbreaks as well as its strategic location in the northern sector of the country, the establishment of this state of the art EOC will greatly enhance the capacity of the regional health directorate and position the public health unit to respond to public health alerts and other related issues.

The Nima Divisional Police Command has arrested Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as “Captain Smart”, the
host of Onua TV/FM morning show in Accra.

A statement issued by the Police on Thursday said he was arrested following some unsavoury pronouncements that hinge on peace and security.

“He has been cautioned on the offence of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace as provided under section 207 of the Criminal Act,1960 (Act 29),” the statement added.

The Police said Captain Smart is presently in Police custody assisting the investigations.

Meanwhile, the National Media Commission (NMC) has described Captain Smart’s utterances as unprofessional and inciteful.

In a letter to Onua FM and copied to the Ghana Journalists Association and other media stakeholders, the NMC said “we are particularly concerned about a recent broadcast in which “Captain Smart” calls for insurrection against the state of Ghana and its institutions.

This, by all standards, crosses the line of robust and critical broadcasting and transforms your radio station into a megaphone of war.

Fuel Prices Set To Go Down Marginally

Be Cautioned: Fuel Prices May Go Up Again Before End Of October – NPA

Fuel prices on the market will go down marginally before the close of the weekend, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) has stated.

This is because the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies are feverishly preparing their profitability statement with the anticipation of a fall in petroleum prices.

“Per the 3.60% decrease in the price of the International Benchmark- Brent crude together with the 7.20% decrease in Gasoline price, the 4.55% decrease in Gasoil price, the Institute for Energy Security projects a downward adjustment in the price of fuel per litre at the various pumps despite the marginal depreciation of the cedi by 0.33%”, it said in a statement.

Already, some leading Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have been reducing fuel prices with Total cutting fuel prices this morning.

A report by Joy Business indicates that Total has dropped its prices by more than 2% per litre. This means diesel is now selling at 6.80 per litre, from the previous 6.96.

Petrol on the other hand is going for 6.80, compared with the earlier price of 6.99.

The reduction is in line with the two-week review of petroleum prices, which has been influenced by the current decline in crude oil prices on the world market.

NSMQ 2021: Prez. Akufo-Addo Congratulates Winners

2021 NSMQ: Prempeh College Beat Presec And Keta To Win Competition

President Nana Akufo-Addo has commended Prempeh College for winning the 2021 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

The ‘Amanfuo’ were crowned the champions of the national championship after they emerged victorious over the ‘Ɔdadeɛs’ and the ‘Dzololians’ (Keta SHTS) in the final contest on Friday, November 26, 2021.

Prempeh College won the contest with 53 points. Six-time champions, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec-Legon) came second with 49 points while Keta Senior High Technical School accumulated 30 points.

Taking to his twitter page on Wednesday, December 1, Mr. Akufo-Addo wrote: “Congratulations to Prempeh College on their victory in the finals of NSMQ 2021.”
