The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has strongly condemned the violent incidents that occurred at the Northern Regional Hospital, formerly the Tamale Central Hospital, after a viral social media video showed some youth storming the facility.
According to the footage, the group forcibly locked up the office of the Medical Director, blocked other administrative areas, and barricaded the Outpatients Department, disrupting healthcare delivery.
In a statement, the GMA described the actions as reckless, lawless and a direct threat to the lives of patients, staff, and critical hospital property. The Association expressed concern about the rising trend of youth groups besieging health facilities to resolve grievances instead of using appropriate channels.
The GMA is calling on the police to take immediate action against all individuals involved. It further urged traditional authorities to step in and guide the youth toward peaceful and lawful means of addressing their concerns.
The Association also appealed to the Ghana Health Service to ensure the safety of the Medical Director and all other staff while investigations and resolutions are pursued.
GMA General Secretary, Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey, noted that the Association is monitoring developments closely and will take additional steps if threats to health workers continue.
