Ghanaian Broadcaster  Bridget Otoo Raises Concerns Over Spending Money on iPhones for Staff During Economic Crisis

Ghanaian broadcaster Bridget Otoo has ignited a nationwide conversation regarding the allocation of state resources during a period of severe economic crisis. Her criticism centers around the Bulk Oil Storage and Transport Company Limited (BOST), which has come under scrutiny for using state budget funds to purchase iPhone 13 Pro Max devices for select staff members.

In her passionate statement, Otoo expressed deep concerns about the timing of such expenditures, given the ongoing economic challenges faced by the nation. Ghana, like many countries, has been grappling with economic difficulties, including external debt interest payments and other financial obligations that strain its resources.

“Something has to change about this country. Buying iPhones for BOST board, buying gold watches for BOG staff. A country that cannot afford paying interest on its external debts, a country in crisis shouldn’t be doing these!” Otoo exclaimed.

The broadcaster’s comments were prompted by reports that BOST had acquired 18 iPhone 13 Pro Max phones for specific staff members, incurring a cost exceeding GH¢28 million. This extravagant expense raised questions about the responsible use of taxpayer funds, especially at a time when austerity measures are often necessary.

In response to mounting criticism, BOST issued a statement on September 30, 2023, acknowledging the purchase of the iPhones for its corporate executives. The company clarified that the total cost of the phones was GHS234,000.00, grossed up for taxes at GHS285,412.16.

BOST defended its decision, stating that the purpose behind the purchase was to equip its team with the tools necessary to stay connected with management information and business intelligence systems. The company believes that this investment will enhance efficient decision-making within the organization, ultimately benefiting its operations.

The controversy surrounding this expenditure highlights the broader debate in Ghana over fiscal responsibility and the prioritization of government spending during difficult economic times. As citizens and policymakers continue to grapple with these issues, the nation faces the challenge of striking a balance between necessary investments and prudent financial management.
