Ghana U-17 Team Defeats Côte d’Ivoire 5-1 in WAFU Zone B Opener

Ghana’s U-17 men’s national team, the Black Starlets, began their 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations campaign with a dominant performance, defeating Côte d’Ivoire 5-1 at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, May 15.

Under the guidance of former Black Stars winger Laryea Kingston, the Starlets are determined to end their seven-year absence from the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by winning the WAFU Zone B qualifiers, and their opening match showcased their ambition.

Joseph Narbi opened the scoring for Ghana in the 27th minute and added a second goal just before halftime with a powerful shot from outside the box.

The second half saw Ghana continue their offensive, with Godfred Sarpong making it 3-0 just three minutes after the restart. Côte d’Ivoire managed to score in the 50th minute, hinting at a possible comeback, but Harve Gbafa quickly reinstated Ghana’s three-goal lead three minutes later.

Substitute Mark Kagawa Mensah sealed the victory with a fifth goal in the 91st minute, securing all three points for the Black Starlets.

Kingston’s team will now focus on their next match against Benin on Tuesday, May 21, at the University of Ghana Stadium. A win in this match would ensure their place in the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations.
