Ghana Shippers’ Authority CEO, Benonita Bismarck, Retires After Seven Years of Impactful Leadership

Benonita Bismarck, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), has retired from her position, marking the conclusion of a highly influential seven-year tenure. Her dedicated service has been recognized as a pivotal era in the history of the organization.

During her tenure, which spanned from June 2017 to November 2023, Bismarck spearheaded significant initiatives that left a lasting impact on the GSA. She led the revision and successful implementation of the Authority’s 5-year Strategic Plan (2019 – 2023), resulting in remarkable outcomes beneficial to both importers and exporters. Moreover, her leadership fostered enhanced cooperation among key stakeholders, including government agencies, industry players, and international partners, bolstering Ghana’s standing in the global shipping domain.

Bismarck was a prominent advocate for the interests of shippers, effectively representing their concerns at national and international forums. Her efforts extended to strategically establishing a branch office in Tamale, thereby expanding the Authority’s coverage nationwide. Under her visionary guidance, the GSA meticulously monitored the country’s transit corridors in the northern sector, significantly broadening organizational reach and optimizing shipping operations across Ghana.

Her tenure was marked by notable accomplishments, including the launch of the ShippersApp, designed to provide immediate shipping information and services to shippers and the general public. Furthermore, her leadership oversaw the completion and inauguration of the Elubo Freight Park in the Western Region and the Hamile Freight Park in the Upper West Region, aimed at supporting trade facilitation.

The GSA, under Bismarck’s leadership, received various accolades and awards, recognizing its outstanding performance. Notably, the organization ranked seventh on the League of Best Performing Public Institutions and secured second place among the Agencies under the Ministry of Transport in the 2023 Public Enterprises League Table Awards. The Authority received several other awards, including the Trade Facilitation Company of the Year and Best Company in Supporting Health Institutions and Facilities.

Benonita Bismarck’s exceptional leadership was also personally acknowledged through numerous awards, honoring her contributions to the GSA and trade facilitation. These awards celebrated her role as a Woman of Excellence in the Public Sector, her contributions to Corporate Social Responsibility, and her overall impact on National Development.

Expressing gratitude for Bismarck’s invaluable contributions, the Authority commended her strong leadership, which successfully guided the organization through challenges and steered it toward greater achievements. Stepping into her role is Mr. Kwesi Baffour Sarpong, bringing a wealth of expertise in the energy sector, market analysis, operations management, and business development, promising a new chapter of dynamic and strategic leadership for the Ghana Shippers’ Authority.
