Global tourism firm Altezza Travel has ranked Ghana as the second safest country in Africa, citing its exceptionally low crime rate and commendable security measures.
The report highlights Ghana’s crime rate as being lower than that of Canada, Greece, and Australia, earning the country global recognition. It also places Ghana ahead of Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, China, and Jamaica on the Global Peace Index.
According to the Numbeo Crime Index 2025, Ghana, Rwanda, and Tunisia are the top three African countries with the lowest crime rates. Despite challenges in defining and measuring crime across various nations, Ghana consistently ranks among the safest countries on the continent.
The report credited Ghana’s safety to the improved performance of the Ghana Police Service, particularly its community patrol initiatives. Civil society groups and religious bodies have also lauded the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for his leadership.
- Terrorism Index: Ghana is among countries with a zero terrorism score.
- Global Safety Report & Human Development Index: While Ghana lags behind “first-world” nations, it surpasses most African countries, including popular tourist destinations like Kenya, Ethiopia, and Madagascar.
Despite bordering countries with significant security concerns, such as Burkina Faso, Ghana maintains stability through its independent judiciary, multiparty democracy, and commitment to free speech and press freedom.
Altezza Travel’s report also lists Ghana among the safest tourism destinations for 2025, based on its analysis of various global indexes, including Global Peace, Terrorism, Crime, Safety, and Human Development.
As Ghana continues to gain recognition for its safety and stability, it solidifies its position as an attractive destination for tourists and investors alike.
