The Ghana Police Service has taken delivery of four new patrol boats to boost the operational capacity of its Marine Police Unit. The acquisition aims to improve security across Ghana’s 550-kilometre coastline, which supports fishing, trade, offshore energy activities and other sectors of the blue economy.

For years, the Marine Police Unit has faced resource limitations, affecting its ability to tackle illegal fishing, piracy, smuggling and other maritime crimes. The new vessels are expected to strengthen operations against human trafficking, drug trafficking and other transnational crimes within Ghana’s territorial waters.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, November 19, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, described the arrival of the patrol boats as a major step towards safeguarding Ghana’s maritime space and protecting livelihoods tied to coastal activities. He assured that government will continue providing the resources needed to address emerging security threats.

Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno said the boats will enhance coastal patrols and increase police visibility across the country’s maritime jurisdiction. He added that the vessels offer the mobility, speed and resilience required to protect lives, secure livelihoods and maintain safety along the coastline.

He commended the dedication of the Marine Police Unit and expressed confidence in their ability to deliver on their mandate with the improved logistics.
