Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has confirmed that Ghana has been exempted from former US President Donald Trump’s recent Green Card Review and immigration suspension policy.
In a Facebook post on December 2, 2025, Ablakwa announced that the decision followed a constructive meeting with Acting US Ambassador to Ghana, Rolf Olson.
He noted that Ghana and the US reviewed progress in their bilateral relations, highlighting key developments such as:
- Restoration of 5-year visas for Ghanaians
- Removal of Trump’s 15% tariffs on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa, and other agricultural products
- Arrangements for World Cup supporters
- Exemption of Ghana from last week’s US Green Card Review and immigration suspension
Ablakwa further disclosed that both countries have strengthened security cooperation under the existing Defence Cooperation Agreement. This includes enhanced intelligence sharing, training activities, and coordinated use of US military aviation assets—all to be managed with the appropriate Ghanaian authorities.
He also expressed optimism about ongoing AGOA negotiations, stressing that Ghana-US relations will continue to prioritize the best outcomes for citizens.
According to Ablakwa, Ghana’s strategic national interest will always guide the country’s foreign policy choices.
