Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has revealed the country’s contemplation of visa waivers for fellow African nations. Inspired by Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa’s recent decisions to permit visa-free travel for Africans, Botchwey expressed Ghana’s earnest consideration, stating, “we are seriously thinking about” joining the visa-free initiative.

In an interview with Citi News, the minister shared that the government is actively exploring this prospect, collaborating with the Ministries of Interior and Tourism to draft a visa waiver agreement. Emphasizing Ghana’s desire to become a “pilgrimage country,” Botchwey aims to attract individuals of African descent to connect with their roots.

Additionally, Ghana and South Africa have already inked a visa waiver agreement, effective from November 1, 2023. This pact facilitates unrestricted travel for citizens of both nations, fostering a 90-day stay within a calendar year for business and tourism purposes.
