The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced that beginning January 1, 2026, the Ghana Card will be mandatory for the purchase and renewal of all motor insurance policies across the country.

In a public notice issued on December 17, 2025, the Commission stated that the directive applies to all motorists nationwide. Corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when undertaking motor insurance transactions.

According to the NIC, the new requirement forms part of broader efforts to strengthen regulation and curb fraud within Ghana’s insurance sector. The Commission explained that linking motor insurance policies to the Ghana Card will improve identity verification and enhance the efficiency and integrity of insurance operations.

The policy is expected to strengthen Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance, reduce insurance fraud, improve claims processing, and align Ghana’s insurance industry with international best practices.

Motorists have been advised to ensure they have their Ghana Card available when visiting insurance outlets from January 2026 to avoid delays. Corporate clients are similarly urged to have their TIN details ready to facilitate smooth transactions.

The notice, signed by the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency, consumer protection, and the modernization of Ghana’s insurance industry.
