The Government of Ghana has formally appealed to the United Kingdom to exempt Ghanaian students and professionals from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) requirement and its associated fees.

The request was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

According to the Minister, the IELTS requirement is unnecessary for Ghanaians, given that English has been the official language and medium of instruction in Ghanaian schools for decades. He noted that students and professionals are educated, examined and certified in English throughout their academic and professional training.

“We called for Ghana to be exempted from the IELTS and the fees payable by Ghanaian students and professionals since English has long been the medium of instruction in Ghana,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

The meeting also focused on strengthening Ghana-UK relations, with discussions covering cooperation in areas such as security, trade, job creation, health, education, governance and constitutional review.

The engagement forms part of Ghana’s broader effort to elevate its bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom to a Strategic Partnership. Particular attention was also given to frameworks aimed at protecting and improving working conditions for Ghanaian health professionals seeking employment opportunities in the UK.
