The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has officially cut sod for the construction of a €5.6 million Centre of Excellence for Green Technology at the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI).
The initiative, which is part of Ghana’s broader Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) transformation agenda, aims to establish a leading hub for innovation, research, and hands-on training in renewable energy and sustainable technologies.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu highlighted that the project aligns with the government’s “Reset Agenda,” which prioritizes tackling youth unemployment through practical, skill-based education.
“As part of President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, His Excellency Steinmeier, we are focusing on developing a TVET policy and establishing a TVET Fund to support the skills training of young people so that they can make a meaningful contribution to our national development effort,” the Minister stated.
The launch ceremony formed part of President Steinmeier’s official visit to Ghana. Earlier on Monday, he was received with a full military Guard of Honour at the Forecourt of the Presidency. He later held a closed-door meeting with President Mahama before joining bilateral discussions between the two nations.
The talks centered on strengthening Ghana-Germany cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, technology, and development partnerships.
The Green Technology Centre, once completed, is expected to position Kumasi as a leading hub for renewable energy training in West Africa, fostering innovation and sustainable development.
