Gender Minister-Designate Naa Momo Lartey Pledges to Embed Ghanaian Family Values in Education

Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister-Designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has vowed to champion the integration of Ghanaian family values into the national education curriculum if confirmed for her new role.

Speaking during her vetting session in Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Naa Momo Lartey highlighted her vision of creating a sustainable foundation for Ghana’s younger generation through education rooted in cultural and societal values.

The Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency emphasized that teaching traditional family principles from an early age would help the youth better understand and uphold Ghanaian societal norms.

Her proposal comes amidst ongoing national discussions around the controversial Anti-Gay Bill, formally known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. The bill, introduced in 2021, sought to legislate against LGBTQ+ advocacy and activities, reflecting what its proponents argued were Ghana’s moral and cultural values.

Commenting on the issue, Naa Momo Lartey expressed her alignment with the sentiments of the majority of Ghanaians, stating:
“As the constitution stands, and as the voices of the people of Ghana have loudly declared, I cannot go against that.”

She further explained that the inclusion of family values in education would not only complement legislative measures but also ensure a long-term, sustainable approach to preserving Ghanaian cultural heritage.

The Gender Minister-Designate stressed the need for a balanced approach, blending education and legislation to address societal concerns. Her proposal, she noted, aligns with the broader goal of fostering unity and morality in Ghanaian society.

While the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill gained significant public support, it faced challenges in the 8th Parliament and remains a topic of heated debate. Naa Momo Lartey’s vision for value-driven education could serve as a pivotal tool in shaping future discourse on cultural preservation and social policy.
