In a ceremony held in Accra, the Ga West Municipal Directorate bestowed honors upon 10 educators for their exceptional dedication to advancing education within the municipality. The awards, presented as part of the 2023 Afrifa-Mensah Teacher Prize Programme, aimed to celebrate and acknowledge the outstanding contributions of educators in fostering learning and innovation.
Under the theme “Thriving on transformation: Celebrating education to champion innovation,” the event highlighted the remarkable efforts of teachers and educators who have inspired learning through their dedication, innovation, and passion.
Among the awardees were five teachers from junior high and senior high schools, each recognized for their exemplary performance with certificates, medals, and refrigerators. Additionally, four individuals, including a head teacher, two municipal education directorate officials, and a driver, received special awards in the form of 32-inch TVs for their significant contributions to enhancing education in the municipality.
The prestigious title of the overall outstanding teacher was awarded to Elvis Doh Mottey, a science teacher at Ayikai Doblo M/A Basic School 1. Mottey was celebrated for his excellence in teaching practice, profound knowledge, and exceptional engagement with students, families, and the wider community. In recognition of his achievements, he received a certificate, a chest freezer, and a medal.
Speaking at the event, Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Akwasi Owusu Afrifa-Mensa, emphasized the importance of recognizing the tireless efforts of educators in the educational sector. He underscored his commitment to supporting educational initiatives and expressed confidence that his successor would continue to prioritize the welfare of teachers.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mama Laryea, former Chief of Party at USAID LEARNING, stressed the necessity for educators to embrace innovation in light of technological advancements. She emphasized the importance of adopting new teaching strategies and leveraging emerging technologies to inspire students to become lifelong learners.
Victor Tawiah, Ga West Municipal Director of Education, applauded the dedication of teachers and urged them to remain motivated in championing innovation. He emphasized the significance of recognizing educators’ contributions and announced plans to encourage similar initiatives across all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies under his jurisdiction.
