Fuel Prices Surge for Third Time in 2025

Ghanaian consumers are once again grappling with an increase in fuel prices as Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) adjust their rates upward for the third consecutive time this year. The latest hikes, which took effect in the first pricing window of February, have been attributed to rising global crude oil prices and the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Shell has adjusted its petrol price from GH₵15.59 per litre in late January to GH₵16.23, while diesel now sells at GH₵16.20 per litre, up from GH₵15.79. Meanwhile, Star Oil has kept its petrol price steady at GH₵14.99 per litre but has raised diesel prices from GH₵14.99 to GH₵15.37 per litre.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) had previously cautioned that fuel prices were likely to rise due to external market forces and the cedi’s instability. These developments have raised concerns among businesses and transport operators, who fear that rising fuel costs will lead to increased operational expenses and higher transport fares.

Despite the upward trend, the Acting CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tameklo, has assured the public that measures are being put in place to stabilize fuel prices and mitigate the effects of future fluctuations. However, many Ghanaians remain skeptical, urging the government to intervene with policies that cushion consumers from persistent hikes.
