Tension has gripped Awutu Kwashie Abbey in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region after police arrested four military officers and two national security operatives for attempting to install a rival chief.
The Bawjiase District Police Command intervened following reports that a group was trying to enstool a new chief despite the presence of an already recognised ruler, Nai Kwashie Abbey VII.
The security officers were detained at the scene, triggering protests from supporters of the incumbent chief, who stormed the police station demanding their release and threatening violence.
Calm was later restored after a military vehicle with registration number 52 GA 62 arrived at the station with additional personnel to secure the release of the arrested officers.
Asafo members loyal to Nai Kwashie Abbey VII strongly condemned the attempted installation, accusing state security agencies of meddling in traditional matters.
Leader of the group, Asafo Supi Nipa-Nka, called on the military and national security to refrain from interfering in chieftaincy issues, warning that such actions could spark unnecessary conflict in the area.
