The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged four public officials for their alleged involvement in a corruption scheme to unlawfully claim 10 containers of imported rice at the Tema Port.
Those charged include Issah Seidu, an officer at the National Insurance Commission; James Keck Osei, a former staffer at the Office of the Vice President; and two Customs officials, John Abban and Peter Archibald Hyde.
According to a statement from the OSP shared on X, the accused used forged documents, including one falsely attributed to the Office of the Vice President to fraudulently take possession of rice imported from Thailand in 2022. Investigators say Seidu masterminded the operation and attempted to auction the goods to himself.
The scheme, which bypassed standard customs clearance procedures despite payment of duties, was uncovered through internal audits and a High Court ruling that flagged the forged documents and halted the clearance process.
The four suspects face charges including corruption, wire fraud, and forgery of official documents. They are expected to appear before the court on Friday, June 27, 2025.
