‘I Respect The Rule Of Law……But Owusu Bempah Has Done So Much For His Party’ – Prophet Nigel Expresses Disappointment In Npp

'I Respect The Rule Of Law......But Owusu Bempah Has Done So Much For His Party' - Prophet Nigel Exp

General Overseer of the Prophet Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, says he is saddened by the arrest and detention of colleague Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah.

According to him, the Founder of the Glorius Word Chapel International, Rev Owusu Bempah is not being treated fairly, adding he is not in a good place.

“I am saddened by the issue and will appeal to the court to temper justice with mercy. First, where he was arrested was not the right place and now he has been remanded,” he said on Accra-based Okay FM.

Rev. Bempah, who has been charged with threat of life for allegedly threatening to kill Nana Agraada, as well as offensive conduct to the breach of peace, made his first appearance before the Accra Circuit Court on Monday, along with five other members of the church.

The other five were also refused bail.

Rev. Bempah and his co-accused church members were taken to court amidst a heavily armed police escort.

Presenting their case, the accused persons pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Their legal counsel, led by Gary Nimako Marfo, prayed the court for his clients to be granted bail.

However, the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Dennis Terkpetey, opposed the petition noting that the defendants need to be remanded to facilitate ongoing investigations.

After hearing both arguments, the court, presided over by Afia Owusua Appiah, dismissed the application for bail to give the prosecution enough time to investigate the case.

Reacting to the development, Prophet Nigel stated his colleague deserves better, adding that his political party [New Patriotic Party] he worked so much for has now abandoned him.

“I respect the rule of law and the fact that nobody is above the law but Owusu Bempah has done so much for his party, especially in the re-election of President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia,” he stated.

He stressed a self-recognisance bail would have been better, looking at the fact that the man of God is not in any way a threat to society or human life.

“I was expecting the court to grant him bail but this should be a wake-up call to all pastors and prophets that dying for a politician is not worth it.

“I agree the law must work but I don’t think I would be treated this way if Mahama was to be in power. He would have been more gracious,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has apologised to journalists for the inconvenience caused them at the hearing of Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah.

This comes after some journalists were said to have been prevented from entering the courtroom on Monday, September 13, where the renowned pastor had been arraigned.

Ahead of the arraignment, some pressmen who were to cover proceedings in court were heckled by some persons believed to be from the defendant’s church.

On the back of this, the Police rendered an apology and assured the public of its commitment to a sanitised trial as far as the media is concerned.

“We wish to give the assurance that journalists will be fully protected and allowed to do their work at all times including the subsequent coverage of the case,” the statement added.

Taxi Driver Arrested For Admitting To Allegedly Being Involved In Ritual Killings

A Circuit Court in Accra has remanded the taxi driver who was arrested earlier allegedly killing several persons for ritual purposes into police custody.

The taxi driver in person of Felix Ansah, 35, in an interview on Accra-based station Onua TV last Thursday, claimed that he had killed several people for rituals.

But making his first appearance before the court presided over by Rosemond Baah Tosu, the taxi driver pleaded not guilty to the charge of the publication of false news.

The legal representative of the accused, Theophilus Donkor, in his application for bail, told the court that his client was speaking in a spiritual realm.

He added, “If anything at all, it is Onua TV that made the publication and not the accused person”.

The prosecution, represented by Chief Inspector Godfred Asideu Bampoe, who held the brief for Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvester Asare, opposed the bail application.

He urged the court to remand the accused person to enable the police to complete its investigation.

Presenting his facts, Chief Inspector Bampoe said on September 2, 2021, the attention of the Police was drawn to a statement made on the ‘Maakye’ show on Onua Television station by the accused to the effect that he buried alive a pregnant woman at Ashaiman.

Upon receiving the information, the prosecutor said the Police launched investigation into the matter which led to the arrest of the accused.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the accused is a taxi driver who resides at Wejia in Accra.

The prosecutor said it was also established that the accused in a response to a question from the host of the ‘Maakye’ show, Captain Smart stated that he (accused) had killed several persons in the past.

“Additionally, the accused person also stated that he buried a pregnant woman alive at Ashiaman to perform a sacrifice for Alfred Agbesi, the former MP for Ashaiman,” Chief Inspector Bampoe told the court.

However, the prosecutor said the police was yet to extend the investigation to locate the scene of the alleged buried and other persons mentioned by the accused person.

After hearing the arguments by both parties, the presiding judge remanded the taxi driver and adjourned the case to Thursday, September 16.
