Five personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were injured in a road accident on Sunday morning while responding to a reported surface fuel tank fire in Buipe, in the Savannah Region.
The Savannah Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOII Salisu Mohammed Sirilbaini, said the Buipe Fire Command received an emergency call early in the morning and immediately dispatched a fire engine to the scene.
According to him, the accident occurred before the firefighters reached their destination when the fire tender veered off the road and fell on its side.
The injured personnel were rushed to the Buipe Government Hospital for treatment. Two of the firefighters have since been treated and discharged, while three others remain in critical condition and are receiving medical attention.
DOII Sirilbaini stated that the Chief Fire Officer has assured the injured firefighters of the best possible medical care. He added that the Savannah Regional Commander, DO2 Abubakar Alhassan, deployed additional firefighters from Damango to support operations in Buipe.
Although plans were initially considered to transfer the injured personnel to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, medical officers at the Buipe Government Hospital confirmed that they have the capacity to manage the cases.
No fatalities were recorded in the incident.
